In Home Photoshoot in the DMV

June 26, 2020

So, you must be here because you are curious about what an in home photoshoot looks like! It is my favorite type of shoot because I get to capture my clients in a comfortable place. If you don’t know by now, I LOVE authentic photos, and photographing my clients at home bring out real emotions because they are not in a public setting. It is especially great for couples that are more private or who dislike PDA, or families who need to have nap time an hour after the shoot. There are tons of great reasons as to why you should not be afraid of an in home photoshoot.

The first reason you should have an in home photoshoot is that you are in the most comfortable place possible! Sometimes we feel awkward when getting in front of the camera, but at home, at least with me as your photographer, you will feel like you have a friend hanging out taking pictures. I do it with my friends all the time, and they don’t feel nervous or weird at all! You do not have to worry about people staring from afar, just you, me, and the camera! My couples love it because as I said, they get to be intimate without strangers around. My families love it because they usually need to be close to home with little ones. Still not sold? So you may think, okay, I feel happy and comfortable at home, but I am not the cleanest person in the world. Guess what, neither am I and that is okay! No judgement here. I like to tell my clients to embrace the clutter because we are trying to capture these moments in time as they are. Whenever families come to me with young ones they apologize for having toys all over the floor. LEAVE THE TOYS it shows the real you and that is what makes these photos so memorable. When you look back on these pictures you won’t be thinking of the clutter, you will be thinking of how much fun you had while being photographed at home. It may be beneficial (and helpful for your photographer) to clean up a bit before they come over, but most people think their home looks messier than it really is, so don’t worry about it!

Say this out loud: “What can we possibly capture when taking pictures at home?” I am glad you asked! You can bake, play video games, snuggle on the couch, read a book, chase each other around the house… The possibilities are endless, and there are “props” all around the house that can be used to change it up. When I take pictures of couples or families, I love to have them bake because we usually enjoy the end product after the shoot! Again it is all about enjoying the little moments in the comfort of your home.

The best part about being at home is there is no need to worry about what to wear for this shoot. If you want to dress up, that’s great! If you want to wear leggings and a sweatshirt, that works too! Usually with an in home photoshoot the cozier you look, the cuter your house looks, or least that’s what I tell myself. This also plays into the weather. Most of us like to dress for the weather and we want to show our style through our pictures, but if it is raining or below freezing outside, it can be hard for our personality to shine through. Don’t get me wrong I still love shooting at places like Old Town Alexandria or Great Falls, but think about all the bugs you can avoid if you are at home! (I very much dislike bugs).

Are you always late to things? No worries! You don’t have to waste gas for traveling and your photographer comes to you! Makes your life much easier right? You get to avoid sitting in traffic and when the shoot is over, you can relax right on your couch. Doesn’t that sound lovely!? There are no rules when it comes to shooting at home. don’t be afraid to book a shoot like this, it is different and fun! The best part is that no one will ever have pictures like yours because it’s your house! It makes your session unique to you, and that is even more memorable than being at a random location.
